Vaccibody-consortium receives EUR 30 mill from the EU commission

The European Commission has contributed EUR 30 million ($40 million) to the launch of Advanced Immunization Technologies (ADITEC), an international consortium of 42 public and private partners developing next generation vaccine technologies. Prophylix Pharma receives ”orphan drug” designation

The European Medicines Agency has decided to give Propylix Pharma orphan drug designation for the company’s prophylactic product to prevent development of the potential lethal condition Neonatal Alloimmune Trombocytopenia in newborns. The orphan drug designation gives Prophylix Pharma access to extended support from EMA during the clinical trial phases and upon market introduction the product will be granted ten years of market exclusivity. The science magazine New Scientist recently published an article about a group of scientists at Idaho National Laboratory applying WindSim’s wind simulation tool in a new and creative way. Important scientific publication in Volusense

The scientific journal Pediatric Pulmnology recently published a paper evaluating the clinical applicability of FloRight – Volusense’s instrument for non-invasive measurement of breathing parameters. Unlike most other instruments for this purpose FloRight measures breathing parameters without application of a mask covering the mouth and nose of the patient. The newly published paper is based on a study in newborns conducted by a research group at Royal Alexandra Children's Hospital in Brighton, led by Dr. Paul Seddon. The paper concludes that in newborns FloRight measures breathing parameters as accurately as mask-based systems and that FloRight has sufficient sensitivity to detect severe respiratory disease.
Prophylix Pharma signs agreement with major Norwegian Hospitals

Prophylix Pharma has signed agreements with four major hospitals to conduct a screening study for identification of pregnancies where there is a risk that the child develops the disease Neonatal Alloimmune Trombocytopenia (NAIT). Through the agreements the four hospitals agrees to undertake a screening program where all pregnancies reported to the hospitals through three consecutive years will be screened for the potential of development of NAIT. The screening program is a part of Prophylix Pharma’s work to develop a prophylactic treatment for NAIT. The four hospitals are: University Hospital of North Norway (Tromsø), St. Olav’s Hospital (Trondheim), Oslo University Hospital (Ullevål) and Haukeland University Hospital.

Norwegian pharma-pipeline soars

The number of Norwegian clinical trials in phases I-III has increased substantially over the last years. Since 2007 the number of Norwegian projects in clinical phase has doubled. Norway has now passed Sweden if the differences in the number inhabitants in the two countries is taken into consideration. The main indications for the Norwegian clinical trials are cancer and infection.
Innovation prize to Hepmarin

Sarsia Seed portfolio company Hepmarin received one of three innovation prizes during North Atlantic Seafood Forum in Oslo, March 2011. The conference is the world's largest seafood conference and Hepmarin received the prize on the basis of the company's successful development of a technology allowing purification of medical anticoagulant heparin from fish based raw material.
Sorbwater to the final in Nordic Cleantech Open

Nordic Cleantech Open has rated Sorbwater as one of the six most promising Norwegian and one of the 25 most promising Nordic technology companies. A jury of 32 members has chosen 25 Nordic companies that will in the coming months compete to win the Nordic Most Promising Technology Company Award. The battle is decided in Copenhagen in April and the winner will represent the Nordic in The Cleantech Open in California, USA.

Sarsia Seed leads new round of funding in Avexxin AS

Sarsia Seed leads a first round of investments (~€2m in total) in Avexxin AS with an initial capital injection in the company to support the development of the company's lead compound against psoriasis through clinical phase I/IIa. Avexxin AS is a Norwegian pharma company focusing on the development of novel small molecule therapeutics for patients with chronic inflammatory conditions. This is the second investment in the company by Sarsia Seed, which initially invested in Avexxin together with Karolinska Innovation in 2007. The current injection was in response to continued positive development of the company's lead compound towards clinical testing.
